Japan Open 2022: Srikanth Reaches Pre-quarterfinals, Lakshya And Saina Out


Srikanth defeated Malaysia’s Lee Ji Jia 22-20, 23-21 in the BWF Super 750 event in a thrilling match.

Osaka: Indian shuttler Kidambi Srikanth reached the pre-quarterfinals of the Japan Open 2022 badminton tournament on Wednesday. 

However, compatriots Lakshya Sen and Saina Nehwal were eliminated after losing in the first round. Former world No. 1 Srikanth defeated Malaysia’s Lee Jia Jia 22-20, 23-21 in the BWF Super 750 event in a thrilling match.

Srikanth said after his win, it was a close match and anything could have happened but I am happy with the way I played. 

Winning matches at this high level is important, because every match is going to be tough. 

He said, I was leading 16-12 in the first game but after giving a lot of points found myself 20-18 behind. I was patient and focused on winning points. I am happy to win and now I will plan to beat the next opponent.

Commonwealth Games 2022 bronze medalist will take on Wang Tzu Wei or Kanta Tsuneyama in the next round. 

Meanwhile, Commonwealth Games champion Lakshya Sen crashed out of the Japan Open after losing 21-18, 14-21, 13-21 in his opening game to home favorites Kenta Nishimoto. 

On the other hand, Olympic medalist Saina Nehwal also crashed out after losing 9-21, 17-21 to new world champion Akane Yamaguchi of Japan.
