There is still not much awareness among people about eye donation. People think that in this process the whole eye is transplanted, whereas it is not so. Only corneas from donated eyes are transplanted in blind people. Corneal blindness occurs due to damage to the tissue covering the front of the eye, the cornea. 

In this procedure the cornea must be removed within an hour of death. It takes only 10-15 minutes to remove it and it does not leave any mark or discoloration on the face. The eyes of a donated person can save the sight of two corneal blind people.

Indifference among people regarding organ donation: In India, there are many types of confusion and misconceptions spread in the minds of people regarding not only eye donation but every type of organ donation. Whether it is lack of awareness, or still inadequate facilities in hospitals and institutions, or people’s narrow thinking about eye donation, and mythological beliefs on it, people talk about eye donation, but they themselves are unable to muster the courage to donate. .

They cannot donate eyes: Although eye donation can be done by any person, provided he is not a person suffering from AIDS, syphilis or blood related infection. The eyes of a person who has died of rabies cannot be donated. Apart from this, it is a misconception that a person suffering from diabetes or cancer cannot donate his eyes. People with diabetes, cancer, high blood pressure and those who wear glasses can donate eyes.

The process is easy: An adult person of any gender, caste and religion can fill the affidavit available on the government website or in various institutions and hospitals and submit it to the nearest eye bank. Once marked as an eye donor, an eye donor card is provided to the person taking the oath.
