Sensex Crashes: The Market Opened Down 826 Points

Amid a weak trend in global markets, major stock indices fell heavily in early trade on Monday and the Sensex fell 826 points during this period. The BSE 30-share index was down 825.61 points at 57,365.68, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 249.95 points to 17,064.70.

Mumbai: Amid a weak trend in global markets, major stock indices fell heavily in early trade on Monday and the Sensex lost 826 points during this period. The BSE 30-share index was down 825.61 points at 57,365.68, while the broader NSE Nifty fell 249.95 points to 17,064.70.

Asian Paints, HDFC, HDFC Bank, Tata Steel, Nestle and Hindustan Unilever were among the major losers in the Sensex. On the other hand, Power Grid was the only stock to register gains. Among other Asian markets, markets in Shanghai and Hong Kong were in the red. US markets closed with a heavy fall on Friday.

On Friday, the Sensex closed at 58,191.29, down 30.81 points or 0.05 per cent. Nifty closed at 17,314.65, down 17.15 points or 0.10 per cent. Meanwhile, the international oil index Brent crude futures fell 0.87 per cent to $ 97.05 per barrel.

According to provisional data of the stock market, foreign institutional investors sold shares worth a net Rs 2,250.77 crore on Friday.
