Idukki: The days of the residents of the remote Idamalkudi tribal village of Idukki in the hilly district of Kerala are about to turn around. The Kerala government has decided to tackle the basic problem of connectivity and mobile connectivity in this panchayat area. Idamalkudi is the first tribal panchayat of the state and is located about 30 km from the hill town of Munnar in Idukki district.

However, due to lack of basic facilities in this panchayat, there is no panchayat office and at present its work is being done from Devikulam. State Backward and Scheduled Community Welfare Minister K. Radhakrishnan said that a high-powered committee has taken decisions on other issues including road connectivity, construction of panchayat office and transport facilities as per the rules of the forest department.

Radhakrishnan said, “The government aims to improve access to tribal villages in the state. We want to improve road connectivity in Idamalkudi to provide electricity, telephone connectivity, drinking water and internet connectivity. He said that the aim of the government is to solve the problems being faced by the residents while maintaining the natural environment of this village.

The population of this village of Muthuvan community is about 3,000. More than 750 families are living in more than 25 habitations in this village. In the meeting of the High Powered Committee held on September 28, it was decided that the Public Works Department should start the construction of better roads within three months after getting the necessary procedural approval from the SC/ST Development Department. In March, an amount of Rs 4 crore was approved for providing internet connectivity to this remote village.
