New Delhi: There is an atmosphere of enthusiasm in the party regarding the elections being held today for the Congress President. This election, which is going to be held after 22 years, is being watched with great interest. A polling station has been set up at the Delhi Pradesh Congress office for voting, where the office bearers of Delhi are casting their votes. Voting is going on since 10 am. Congress office-bearers can cast their vote here till 4 pm.

State Congress President Anil Chaudhary reached here in the morning to cast his vote and he said that Congress has always kept democracy alive. Under the same, voting is taking place across the country for the election of the National President. Arrangements have also been made in Delhi. Where there are 280 officials of Delhi, they can come and put them here. Those who are not in Delhi due to any reason can cast their vote in other states also at the polling station there. In the oldest party Congress, after 24 years, non-Gandhi will be elected as the president. However, the Gandhi family will continue to lead the party.

At the same time, the new president is expected to work together to meet future challenges such as strengthening the organisation, ensuring victory in state elections and building opposition unity ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha elections.

Let us tell you that the last president was elected in the Congress in 2000. In which Sonia Gandhi defeated Jitendra Prasad by a huge margin. Prior to this, he took charge of the party in 1998. The last non-Gandhi president of the Congress was in 1996, when Sitaram Kesri was elected to the party’s top post by defeating Sharad Pawar and Rajesh Pilot. In this sequence, on October 17, 2022, more than 9000 PCC representatives will elect the next non-Gandhi president from amongst Mallikarjun Kharge and Shashi Tharoor. Both the leaders came to the fray after Rahul Gandhi refused to file his nomination papers. Rahul Gandhi was unanimously elected party president in 2017 but resigned in 2019, taking responsibility for the defeat in the Lok Sabha elections. Since then, Sonia Gandhi remained the interim president.
