The results of the election for the post of Congress President are out. Mallikarjun Kharge has been elected as the new President of Congress. This is the first time after 24 years that the party got a president outside the Gandhi family. Prior to this, Sitaram Kesari was the non-Gandhi president. In the 137-year history of the Congress, elections were held for the 6th time for the post of President.

New Delhi: Mallikarjun Kharge has become the new president of the country’s oldest political party, Congress. Mallikarjun Kharge got 7897 votes. While Shashi Tharoor, who is contesting against him, got 1072 votes. At the same time, 416 votes became invalid. A total of 9385 delegates had cast their votes in the voting for the post of Congress President on October 17.

Tharoor said, I thank Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi for their contribution in conducting free and fair elections for the post of Congress President. About 9500 delegates (members of the electoral college), including Congress President Sonia Gandhi, former Prime Minister Manmohan Singh, former Congress President Rahul Gandhi and several other senior leaders, voted on Monday to elect the new President of the party.

The results of the election for the post of Congress President came in the field a day before the nomination . Mallikarjun Kharge, who entered the fray a day before the nomination, defeated Shashi Tharoor in the presidential election. Earlier Rajasthan Chief Minister Ashok Gehlot was going to contest the election for the post of President, but after the political drama in Rajasthan, he refused to contest for the post of President after meeting Sonia Gandhi. After this Kharge had decided to contest the elections.
