Due to the complete ban on firecrackers in many states, 1.5 lakh people engaged in the firecracker manufacturing industry in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu have become unemployed. Fireworks industry has been the only source of income for the people here.

Sivakasi: Due to the complete ban on firecrackers in many states, 1.5 lakh people engaged in the firecracker manufacturing industry in Sivakasi, Tamil Nadu have become unemployed. At the same time, due to Kovid-19, firecracker manufacturers suffered even more damage in two years. After this pause, there is a possibility of a boom in business this Diwali. It is noteworthy that the firecracker sector has given employment to more than 7 lakh people, and presently more than 1,000 registered firecracker units are in operation.

For over 6.5 lakh families of Sivakasi, the fireworks industry has been their only source of income. However, recent developments, including the ban on barium, have rendered more than 1.5 lakh people jobless. The Garland cracker has been banned despite being in vogue. Since Garland crackers are completely handmade. Due to this a large number of workers lost their jobs.

This work was done by about 40 percent of the factory workers. Nagendra, a firecracker laborer, said, ‘I have spent the last 20 years working in a firecracker factory. The firecracker industry is the only industry in the Sivakasi region. The cracker industry is the only source of income for 5 lakh people who live here. Agriculture work cannot be done in these circumstances, only firecrackers can do business.

For many years the fireworks industry has been affected by issues such as restrictions on the use of certain chemicals and certain explosives. Due to rain, firecrackers cannot be manufactured at this time. As a result there has been loss of employment. Several states have banned the sale and bursting of firecrackers around Diwali. The business of firecrackers has come to a standstill. Nagendra said, ‘Therefore, on behalf of the firecracker workers, I request that the Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu should take advice from Prime Minister Modi and the livelihood of the firecracker workers should be taken care of.
