Cedric Ghevart, Professor and Principal Investigator from the University of Cambridge and NHS Blood and Transplant, said that the hope is that red blood cells grown in our laboratory will live longer than cells coming from blood donors.

London: In the world’s first clinical trial in Britain, people were given lab-prepared blood by scientists. Researchers said that if proven safe and effective, the manufactured blood cells could revolutionize timely treatment for people with rare blood disorders. Scientists said that some people with disorders like sickle cell and rare blood types find it difficult to get enough donated blood. This can prove to be a boon for such people.

Cedric Ghevart, Professor and Principal Investigator from the University of Cambridge and NHS Blood and Transplant, said that the hope is that red blood cells grown in our laboratory will live longer than cells coming from blood donors.

it works like this

This experiment begins with blood obtained from a normal blood donation (approximately 470 ml)

Magnetic beads are used to pull out flexible stem cells that are capable of becoming red blood cells.

These stem cells are grown in large numbers in laboratories.

and then red blood cells are directed to become

This process takes about three weeks and the initial pool of about half a million stem cells results in 50 billion red blood cells.

These are filtered to obtain about 15 billion red blood cells.

which can be transplanted into the patient’s body

Developed from stem cells of donors: The team of researchers from the University of Cambridge, UK, said that blood cells were developed from the stem cells of donors. It was transferred to healthy volunteers. So far, two people have been given red blood cells prepared in the lab. These are being monitored, so far no unwanted disorder has been seen in them. In this trial, the lifespan of lab-grown cells is being studied compared to transfusion of red blood cells from the same donor.

Those who have regular blood transfusions will need less blood transfusion: Scientists said that if our test is successful, it will mean that patients who currently need regular blood transfusions for a long time will be less in the future. Blood transfusion will be required. This will allow them to be taken better care of.
