Here’s a simple recipe for making masoor dal:
1 cup masoor dal (red lentils)
2 cups water
1 onion, chopped
2 cloves garlic, minced
1 tomato, chopped
1 tsp turmeric
1 tsp cumin powder
1 tsp coriander powder
Salt to taste
1 tbsp ghee or oil
1 tsp cumin seeds
1 tsp mustard seeds
1 tsp red chili powder
1/2 tsp garam masala
fresh coriander leaves for garnish
Wash and filter the masoor dal.
In a vessel add Masoor Dal, water, onion, garlic, tomato, turmeric, cumin powder, coriander powder and salt.
Bring to a boil then reduce heat to a low simmer. Cover and cook for 20-25 minutes, till the dal becomes soft and breaks down.
Heat ghee or oil in a separate pan on medium heat.
Add cumin and mustard seeds. When they start to crackle, add red chili powder and garam masala.
Pour the spice mixture into the pot containing the cooked lentils. Shake to mix.
Serve hot garnished with fresh coriander leaves. enjoy!
